Since we began fund raising for Jack we have met some really special people along the way, we have found that so many people are willing to help in any way they can. Family and friends have all pulled together to show their support for Jack and even people who have never met Jack before have given their time and money to help him which is truly amazing, and we are eternally grateful. Below is a list of all the special people we would like to thank:

Saturday 5th April - Steve & Kath Featherstone very kindly had a collection at their wedding reception and raised £141. Thank you so much to you both! (Please visit our thank you page)

Sunday 4th May - Fund raising party at the Keepers on Woodhouse Lane organised by Paul James and his wife Sharon, live entertainment throughout the day, bingo and snail racing, a great day had by all. A huge thank you to Paul & Sharon and the fabulous entertainment.

Tuesday 13th May - Body Shop Party at Douglas Bank on Woodhouse Lane, Thanks to everybody who came along to show their support, we raised £42 on the night and received £45 in donations. Many thanks to Gill Baxter for a great night.

When Jack was diagnosed with Autism I spent hours on the Internet searching for information, and looking for support. In my search I came across a child centred program that would be perfect for Jack, 'The Son-Rise Program'® at the Autism Treatment Centre of America(TM).

The Son-Rise Program was originally developed by a family called the Kaufman's in 1974. Barry Neil Kaufman (Co-Founder/Co-Director, Option Institute and best-selling author, Happiness Is A Choice) and Samahria Lyte Kaufman (Co-Founder/Co-Director, Option Institute. She is also Co-Founder of the Autism Treatment Center of America) developed the program for their son Raun who was diagnosed as severely autistic. Raun was tested as having an IQ of less than 30, his parents were told to put him in an institute and forget about him. Thankfully the Kaufmans did not accept this and chose their own path.

They spent hour after hour working with Raun in their bathroom where there was no distraction, starting out by joining him when he engaged in repetitive, solitary play. They wanted to gain an understanding of why he played that way and they just wanted to do anything to be close to their precious little boy!

The results they got from their loving and accepting attitude where far beyond any expectations!

The Son-Rise Program was born, and Barry (Bears) and Samahria started to get calls from families all over the world asking if they could help their special children too.

Raun K Kaufman now has no diagnosis and is completely cured of Autism. He has graduated university with a degree in Biomedical Ethics and works as an international Speaker, Writer and Teacher for the Son-Rise Program. He is CEO or Chief Executive Officer of The Option Institute and Autism Treatment Center of America (tm)

They have lots of webinars there that you can see and learn lots of really useful techniques to help your special child.

Son-Rise has helped thousands of families since the program originated and is going from strength to strength. I like this program as it concentrates on Jack as a person and works on his abilities, all too often since Jack has been diagnosed people have presumed they know him and how he should behave just from the label he has been given and I find this very frustrating. At Son-Rise they work on the theory that in order to get your child to join you in your world, you firstly have to accept him in his!

Son-Rise say they don't offer a cure but they offer hope, which is all we need. 'We do not put limits
on the possibilities for your child, You're not giving up on your child, neither are we'. We can help you to bring your child as far across the bridge from Autism to recovery as possible. For some, this means complete recovery. For others, this means improvements in their child's development, human connection, communication, skill acquisition and quality of life far beyond what most would have ever predicted.

Unfortunately our government don't yet provide funding for the full program. It is possible to apply for a grant with a charity called The Caudwell Children if you do your training in London and you may be entitled to a scholarship if training in America. The staff at Son-Rise are extremely helpful and can support you in finding a way to take part in the program. Trust me its nowhere near as hard as you think! and it will be the best thing you could ever do!!

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is currently looking for applications from parents (including foster parents) and carers to sit on the group developing a clinical guideline on the recognition, referral and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in children and young people.

These members of this group will play a key role in making sure that the views, experiences and interests of children and young people, and their parents and carers, inform the guideline's development and its recommendations to the NHS.

Welcome to Jack's website!

This site has been created for Jack as he starts his journey to the Son-Rise Autism Treatment Centre of America (TM).

Jack was born a perfectly happy healthy baby in June 2003, he met all of his developmental targets before he should have done and was very advanced for his age.

This all changed when Jack was 14 months old (just around the time that he had his MMR injection). Jack changed over night, he withdrew into his own little world, he wouldn't answer to his name, the speech he did have he lost, he didn't want to communicate with anybody and would avoid eye contact at all cost, even the slightest noise would be very distressing for him. He stopped playing with toys and would very often take all of his toys out of the box and climb in himself to hide, the only toy he ever looked at was a Bear in the big blue house book that he read from cover to cover time and time again.

To watch Jack go through this was absolutely heart breaking and we were powerless to stop it. Jack was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2 1/2 and our world fell apart.

Since then we have worked really hard with him to give him every opportunity that any other child of his age would have, which has resulted in a huge improvement in Jacks tolerance of social situations, and with lots of love and support Jack is able to show his affection now to others.

Jack has a team of professionals involved with him who have supported him since diagnosis.

He has no verbal communication, very occasionally he will say 'Yes' or 'No' and 'Mama' 'Dada' but is not able to communicate his needs and will get very frustrated about this at times. I have to do everything in my power to help Jack and give him the best possible chance in life to tackle his autism.

With that in mind I started to take a closer look at the Son-Rise program®. On this site I will show the benefits of the Son-Rise program® and also give information about support groups for other parents and carers. Check the 'Site pages' column at the left of the screen for updates.

WHO IS ROS BLACKBURN? Ros Blackburn is an adult with autism who lives in Essex. At a very young age she appeared withdrawn, isolated and very much in a world of her own. Ros was eventually diagnosed severely autistic but with average intellectual ability. Now Ros lectures nationally and internationally giving insight into her own experiences and the care and education practices she has observed. It doesn’t seem very long ago that I decided to take part in the Son-Rise program with Jack; at first I had a few worries. How would we raise enough funds to take part in the program? How will we make his playroom?

Son-Rise seemed a million miles away and being based in America when we are in Wigan (Greater Manchester) made me all the more nervous. I never expected that just 10 months down the line we would have raised nearly £18’000.00 and with all the special people we met along the way it wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be, we’ve had a great time!

From the minute I contacted Son-Rise to express an interest, any doubts I had disappeared. They sent out an information pack with DVD’s to watch other families’ experiences and I could relate to each one. I was introduced to a lady called Lori from Son-Rise who has been a tremendous support to our family, keeping in regular contact via email and telephone and the fact that she was in America just wasn’t an issue.

Jack has recently got a new Learning Support Assistant in school (Cath Balmer) and she has a brilliant relationship with him, I asked if Cath would like to come along to the training with me and without hesitation she said she would love to come. (Thanks to Mrs Parkinson for giving her permission)

Lori helped us prepare for the Start Up Program, and told us to apply to the Caudwell Children for funding, I’m so glad we did because Caudwell very kindly paid 80% of the costs for both myself and Cath.

Before we knew it, it was 25th January and we travelled to London for the first round of training at the Start Up program. Jack spent the week with Grandma & Grandad and had a fantastic time, and after all my worrying and thinking he would be distraught because his routine had changed, he had no problems at all. In fact he slept all night every night in his own bed!!!! I could have cried!

We arrived bright and early at Glaziers Hall on the Monday morning along with 222 other people all with the same goal to help their special children.

Out of the 224 people there in total there were parents, volunteers, and professionals from all over the world, and what were a group of strangers at the beginning of the week became good friends by Friday. Son-Rise staff were on hand at the course and Son-Rise volunteers made up of parents who had already done the program with their children and wanted to help other families just like themselves, they were all superb.

Bryn N. Hogan (Executive Director of the Autism Treatment Center of America) and William Hogan (Senior Teacher and Senior Trainer at the Autism Treatment Center of America) were our teachers for the week; they are the daughter and son-in-law of Barry Neil Kaufman and Samahria Lyte Kaufman who originally developed the Son-Rise Program for their son. They also have another special bond with the program as they adopted a child who was later diagnosed as autistic, they worked with their daughter using the Son-Rise principles and she too has now fully recovered.

Bryn and William are an absolutely amazing couple, this was the only training course I have ever attended where it wasn’t read from a PowerPoint presentation, they didn’t need any of that because they really spoke from the heart and you could tell they had so much passion for helping our special children. They made everything easy to understand and it all just made so much sense. There was plenty of opportunity to ask questions and there wasn’t any question that they couldn’t answer.

They taught us the Son-Rise techniques were the primary focus is on socialisation and building a relationship with the child, we were taught ways to adjust our attitude to achieve ultimate results and ways that we can recruit and train other people who can share this amazing experience of helping our special little boy.

The Son-Rise principles are based on love and acceptance and a non judgemental attitude so everything about it just feels right. I have looked at various other interventions for Jack and they all involve trying to stop him doing what he enjoys doing and make him do what is socially acceptable, and it all seems like a constant battle, I really don’t want a relationship like that with my little boy so Son-Rise is perfect for us.

The week absolutely flew by, we learnt so much and I can’t wait to start playing in Jack’s playroom putting all our techniques into practice. We now have to start recruiting and training volunteers to work with Jack.

My dad has started preparing Jack’s playroom, we have switched the bedrooms around so Jack can have a bigger room to play in and he will have the smaller room as his bedroom, Grandad has worked really hard for us the past few weeks along with Uncle David too so it won’t be long till his playroom is up and running and we can start making a difference.

My only regret in all of this is that I didn’t start Son-Rise sooner, it was nowhere near as difficult to get here as I imagined in fact it was really easy! I want to thank everybody concerned for helping us get to where we are today.

I apologise for taking so long to update Jack’s website but the truth is we have been having the time of our lives!

Since attending the Son-Rise start Up Program in January, my dad has worked really hard and got Jack’s playroom ready for us and I officially started Jack’s Son-Rise Program on Saturday 21 February 09.

Jack’s progress so far has just been phenomenal ! I have been working with him for one to two hours in the evening after school and three to four hours on a Saturday and Sunday.

Just in one week of starting the program Jack said three words clearly (Mum, door and Hiya) he has learnt to request things from the shelf by pointing and attempting to say a word, he puts his own socks on and can fasten a zip and his eye contact improved immensely!

The first time I heard him say “Mum” clearly was in the waiting room at our local vets, he went to the opposite side of the room and started shouting “Mum” at the top of his voice, I think I went into shock and sat with my mouth open, everybody was looking at me as if to say ‘are you going to tell him to be quiet?’ NOT A CHANCE! The following day he came running out of school shouting “Mum” and gave me a big hug and a kiss.

In school they can’t quite believe how well he’s doing, it’s a regular occurrence now that Jack’s teachers come out at the end of the day to tell me how well he has done. He has started saying “Yes”, “No” and “More” to express what he wants, he can request things from the other children by looking into their eyes and pointing to what he wants, and his eye contact has improved so much that he was able to follow an instruction from his teacher through a closed window.

When I picked Jack up from school last week he was out in the play ground, he had learnt to ride a bike on his own and was peddling around with the biggest grin from ear to ear. I thought I would burst with pride! As you can imagine he has been smothered with kisses.

He interacts so much better now and seems to really enjoy interactive games. Just last night in his playroom we sat opposite each other singing ♫ Heads, shoulders, knees and toes ♫ and when it came to eyes Jack pointed to my eyes and said “eye”. He roared laughing when we played tickling games and through his laughter managed to say “No don’t”.

Not too long ago Jack’s only form of communication was crying and dragging you to tell you what he wanted, now he can say approximately 10 words clearly, and he is such a happy little boy. He has even started to sleep all night every night!!! (Halleluiah)! He is just so much happier and content.

I absolutely love our playroom sessions the interaction we have is priceless and is even better than I thought it would be, it’s that special time when nothing else matters in the world. I can imagine in years to come I will be saying “Come on Jack lets go in the playroom” and he will answer “Mum I’m 21 I’m going for a pint with my mates” What will I do?????

Like many parents when I received Jack’s diagnosis I was faced with a long list of things he would never do. He may never speak, he won’t be able to form relationships, he will have behavioural problems, incontinence problems the list was endless and the grief you feel when you hear what is predicted for your child is indescribable. Jack is already proving everybody wrong and he does something every single day to make me the proudest mum alive!

We have just had a Son-Rise Child Facilitator visit us for the weekend (Barbara Balla) she spent six hours a day in the playroom with Jack and allowed an hour a day to answer questions from myself and a team of volunteers who will very soon be working with Jack in his room. It was a great weekend, we all learnt so much from Barbara and Jack had a brilliant time. We are hoping to have Barbara visit again very soon.

My next round of Son-Rise training is in May. It’s a one week training course in London (New Frontiers) and I can’t wait. Jack is going from strength to strength!!

Maria's Great Manchester Run

I would like to introduce our friend Maria Smallman. We first met Maria last summer when she and her partner Andy contacted us to say they had heard of Jack's appeal and they had been selling Autism Awareness badges to raise funds for him.

Maria & Andy also have a little boy diagnosed with ASD and when their son was diagnosed they decided to do something positive and raise awareness of his condition. All the money they raised was very kindly donated to Jack's appeal.

Maria & Andy have been very supportive of our cause and Maria is now also volunteering for Jack in his Son-Rise Program. We are very grateful to have Maria as part of our team! she is truly amazing and is always looking for ways to help other people.

Maria is taking part in The Bupa Great Manchester Run on 17 May 2009. Its a grueling 10 km run and all of the proceeds will be donated to The National Autistic Society to benefit families up and down the country who are affected by Autism.

I'm sure you will agree Maria is an amazing lady and she would really appreciate your support.
